Each lesson has three components: rereading for fluency, word work, and guided oral reading.
Rereading for fluency:
Your child will read the past week’s assignments. Afterwards, to tutor will reread the passage again to your child to demonstrate ideal pacing and fluency for the passage, followed by the student rereading the passage.
Word Work:
The middle part of the lesson is devoted to isolated phonic’s segmentation, manipulation, blending, sorting and writing. Here students are introduced to unknown letter sounds/blends with the game “Switch It”. During “Switch It”, students aurally and visually work with letter sounds/blends while moving corresponding letter cards, called graphemes, to build words. The mental processes of learning to read are powerfully integrated during “Switch It”, where students demonstrate understanding and mastery of letter sound pronunciation through aural, visual, and oral manipulation of sounds. Other word work activities include “Build It”, Read It”, “Write It”, and “Flex It.” The joy of this program is the built in game-like approach to learning!
Guided Oral Reading:
The final part of the lesson introduces new reading material which is sent home for homework practice. During guided oral reading , students are given short reading material that corresponds and reinforces the word work part of the lesson.
